Best practices for fire extinguisher placement

Here are a few best practices for fire extinguisher placement that we all need to follow on every fertilizer building construction site:

  • Visibility & Accessibility: Fire extinguishers must be clearly visible and unobstructed. Do not store materials, tools, or equipment in front of or around them.
  • Mounting: Extinguishers should be mounted on walls, stands, or posts, never left on the ground where they can be damaged or hidden.
  • Travel Distance: A fire extinguisher should be available within 100 feet of travel distance at all times.
  • Equipment & Hot Work Areas: Place extinguishers near equipment, fuel storage, and areas where hot work (cutting, welding, grinding) is taking place.
  • Marking & Signage: Where visibility might be limited, use signage to indicate extinguisher locations.
  • Inspections: Crews should check extinguishers regularly for accurate inspection tags, proper charge, and condition. Report any damaged or missing extinguishers immediately to your foreman.

Keeping fire extinguishers properly placed and accessible is not just about compliance, it’s about ensuring we have the tools at hand when seconds matter. Let’s stay proactive and make this an area where we consistently score high on audits.
