Why It Matters:
Hand grinders (angle grinders) are powerful and versatile tools, but if used incorrectly or carelessly,
they can cause serious injuries. Flying sparks, broken wheels, and kickback are just a few of the hazards
involved.
Common Hazards:
- Wheel Explosions: If a grinding wheel is damaged, it can shatter at high speeds.
- Kickback: The grinder can suddenly jerk if it catches on something.
- Flying Debris: Sparks, metal fragments, and abrasive dust can injure your eyes or skin.
- Electric Shock: Damaged cords or wet conditions are a major risk.
- Hearing Damage: Grinders are LOUD, use hearing protection.
- Safety Tips:
- Inspect Before Use
o Check the wheel on angle grinders for cracks or damage.
o Make sure guards are in place and secure.
o Confirm the power cord is in good shape. - Wear the Right PPE
o Safety glasses AND, in some instances, a face shield.
o Hearing protection.
o Gloves and long sleeves.
o Flame-resistant clothing when grinding metal. - Use the Right Wheel
o Match the wheel to the tool and material.
o Never use a wheel rated for lower RPM than your grinder. - Stay in Control
o Hold the angle grinder with both hands.
o Keep a firm grip, expect a little kickback.
o Stand to the side when starting it up. - Don’t Modify or Remove Guards
o The guard is there for a reason, don’t take shortcuts. - Let It Stop on Its Own
o Don’t set it down until the wheel completely stops spinning. - Unplug When Not in Use
o Disconnect power before changing wheels or adjusting.
